About Us
So, we don’t want to sound negative, but Albuquerque sucks. It’s not the “Land of Enchantment,” or “The Land of MaƱana;” it’s the Land That Time Forgot. It’s still 1985 here. You will hear Kenny Rogers “The Gambler” and Billy Joel “Uptown Girl” played unironically in community spaces.
Mostly we just take photos of birds and try to find restaurants that aren’t shockingly bad. Occasionally we venture out to see what else might be happening in town and regularly return with sadness in our hearts.
Most everybody here is delightfully pleasant, but they’re not demanding something better of their city. And yeah, the crime is miserable, the urban sprawl is embarrassing, the education is not adequate, the poverty is crushing, and don’t even try to be a pedestrian or find a doctor. We are 50th out of 50 states for children for the last five years. Most of the people who like it here are either old and foggy around the edges, or they were born here and are used to the succotash.
If you’re planning a visit, please go directly to the rental car counter upon your arrival at the airport, rent a vehicle, and proceed as quickly as you can directly to Santa Fe or the national parks and take very low expectations with you except Carlsbad which will blow your mind. Northern New Mexico is a magical place worth exploring, many of the reservations have interesting cultural and educational opportunities (and casinos unfortunately), but Albuquerque is a dyspeptic wasteland so don’t waste time here. The Visit Albuquerque website tries real hard to make you believe Albuquerque is worth seeing. It’s not.
To be fair, Albuquerque has a few gems and we’re on a fun mission to find them. If you’re stuck here because your alien ship lost its warp drive, we know a handful of places that don’t stink and maybe we can help you find them. You might also want to set your alarm for five minutes before sunset as many nights you’ll want to be outside looking up to see a pretty cool sky.
Important: Don’t trust Google Reviews or Yelp here. You’re in a land dominated by poverty and less than stellar education, so people do not know what they’re talking about when posting on the internet.
